- Hello everyone, today I will use my power in order to tell you more about black music.
- This is the beginning of black music. It was created during slavery in the 17th century, they were called work songs and were allowed because slaves worked better as they were on rythm. They were used to avoid the thoughts of their bad condition in the fields.
- In the 18th century, spiritual was created at the beginning of Black churches. It was especially used during the Civil war. Then, Gospel was invented and it is really close to spiritual except it has more references to the apostles. Some songs were used by Martin Luther King Jr. to defend Black people's rights.
- Blues was created between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It is melancholy, it is used to express their desires or to complain. The main topics are poverty, alcoholism and racism. In 1940, it will lead to Rythm'n'blues like "Hit the road Jack" from Ray Charles which is about his own life.
- In 1917, in New Orleans, Jazz was created. One of the famous singers of this genre is Billie Holliday. In Strange Fruit, she talks about lynchings : some black people were hung in public places in front of people. It was used to terrorize and control Black people.
- Rock'n'roll was also invented by black people. Even though Elvis Presley was really famous, I can mention Chuck Berry with his song "Johnny B. Goode".He sings about a new American dream with the idea of being free and able to play music as much as he wants.
