  • The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street : Theme
  • One major theme in Rod Serling's The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street is that mankind is its own worst enemy. For example, on page 83 Women One says, You killed him Charlie, you shot him dead! This quote shows that Charlie killed one of his fellow neighbors, some one who is supposed to be a friend. Furthermore, on page 86 Figure One states, They pick the most dangerous enemy they can find... and it's themselves, This quote illustrates that humans (or mankind) will find themselves as their most dangerous enemy. Along with that, on page 86 the Narrator says, There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, predjuduces - to be only found in the minds of men. For the record predjuduces can kill and suspicion can destroy, This quote tells us that seeds of destruction are planted inside the minds of men. In conclusion, these three pieces of evidence show that one of the main themes in Rod Serling's The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street is mankind is its own worst enemy.
