The Mexican American War greatly complicated the issue of slavery in the United States. The size of the nation was increased by around 25%, and there were many arguments as to whether the land would be slave or free land. Abolitionists thought that the south was trying to make the land into slave states, which made sense as the majority of the land was in the south. The Wilmot Proviso was suggested (to ban slavery in the new land entirely) but was unsuccessful. Instead, the Compromise of 1850 was made, which made California a free state, banned slave trade in DC, and allowed New Mexico and Utah to decide for themselves. This was to fix the issues with the 36-30 latitude line of slave and free state separation, with which some states were split into two parts.
