The peasants and workers had to pay heavy taxes and food prices went high up for them. Women weren't able to provide for their families while the noblemen enjoyed their wealth. Their King Louis XVI and Queen Antoinette were incompetent rulers who spent many gold for war with neighboring countries.

The people of France were separated into an unfair hierarchy called the Three Estates. The top estate consisted of the clergy, or priests and bishops. The middle estate consisted of the nobles while the last estate consisted of peasants and bourgeoisie. The elites had strong law courts while everyone else got the Estates General, who was only able to petition the king.

France was under the absolute monarchy under the rule of King Louis the XIV, whose foreign policies led to deep financial troubles in deficit spending and bankruptcy. Despite the circumstances of the financial crisis, he and Queen Mario Antoinette burned their money on luxuries.
