  • So Sara, how are you liking our trip to the moon
  • It's quite interesting actually. I've noticed many unusual things
  • Slayt: 2
  • Really, how so?
  • Well for starters, I threw my trash down the shoot where it spat it out into space. However, i noticed that it kept going. It never slowed down or increased its speed
  • Slayt: 3
  • See my soda can is still traveling at a constant velocity without accelerating.
  • Well honey that's just because there is no gravity in space. There for according to Newtons First law an object will stay at rest or in constant motion unless something acts upon it.
  • Slayt: 4
  • But what does gravity have to do with anything?
  • Well gravity is the acceleration that an object being affected by vertically is being pulled down by. So, because there is no gravity in space or air nothing is going to slow down your trash unless it bumps into a meteor or a spaceship.
  • Slayt: 5
  • Say do you think this could explain why two balls that i pushed with the same force had different accelerations?
  • Well not exactly but Newtons second law should do the trick. It's quite simple actually. It explains the relationship between force mass and acceleration. So, force and mass and force and acceleration and force and mass are directly proportional while mass and acceleration are inversely proportional.

  • Well did one ball have more mass than the other?
  • Yes, I suppose it did.
  • Thats explains why the same force resulted in different accelerations. The ball with more mass had more inertia to overcome. Therefore, it would take more force to move an object with a bigger mass with the same acceleration as an object with a smaller one.
  • Slayt: 7
  • Ok Mom i have one last question. When I was practicing shooting asteroids i felt the recoil of the blaster gun. How is this possible?
  • Well, that would be best explained by Newtons third law. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
  • Slayt: 8
  • So, the reason you felt a recoil is because the action force you shot the gun with was acting right back at you with the same exact reaction force.
  • But how can this be. You're telling that the force of an object at rest on a table in being exerted back onto the object by the table?
  • Slayt: 9
  • Yup you're exactly correct! The reason the object is stable is because the same force it is exerting is being given back to it. So, the forces are in a state of equilibrium. This means the forces basically cancel out. So, bringing it back to his first law the object will not move unless something is acting upon it.
  • Wow you've really taught me a lot of things today. I hope I can apply these concepts back on earth!
