Josephine Baker grew up in poverty, her mom quit her career to be with her. Her dad Eddie Carson, left them both shortly after her birth. Her mother, Carrie McDonald remarried shortly after and they had more children. She did not have much going for her, as her family was pointing their attention to the newborns.
At the age of 8, Baker would clean and babysit the wealthy families to get money for her growing family. She was treated like a poor servant and had no appreciation for work, not even from her family.
2 years later she was in and out of school. At the age of 13 she ran away from home to go get a job as a waitress at the club. As she was working she met a guy named Willie Wells and they got married, they got divorced weeks later.
Around that time Baker started to dance, she would show her skills at the club and on the streets. She gained some popularity and by 1919 she was touring the U.S. with bands and actors.
In 9121 she met the man of whose name she had kept. Willie Baker and her got married but years later they got a divorce. In the same year of 1923, she landed a role in the musical Shuffle Along as a singer and dancer. This brought a lot of fame to her name. This musical really took off and her name grew. She became very successful and started to perform all over the world
Eventually, Baker took her talents to New York City. She contributed to the celebration of Black culture, music and arts now known as the Harlem Renaissance. She was very popular all around the world and she was very important to the Harlem Renaissance.
