  • Indians were forced to buy vital minerals from their British rulers. The Indian's poor and rich suffered greatly under the tax.
  • According to our new Salt Act of 1882, we are prohibiting Indians from collecting or selling salt.

  • Gandhi has just returned from South Africa to begin working on India's independence from the British
  • We have to fight for our independence from Britain!
  • We must defy the salt act, but do so non violently.
  • Gandhi reasoned and knew that defying the Salt Act would be the most reasonable thing to do
  • Gandhi wrote a letter to inform Viceroy Lord Irwin that he and the others would be boycotting the salt laws in 10 days.
  • In 10 days we will set out to Sabermanti!
  • We are going to make salt from the sea water. This is the start of our movement!
  • Gandhi left with many followers and gained more and more as he was going to Sabermanti.
  • Civil disobedience spread all throughout India. British authorities ended up arresting more than 60,000 Indians. 
  • On May 5th, Gandhi was arrested.
