My grandpa, Jose Ernesto González, is a person I admire deeply because of his perseverance and accomplishments. Despite living in a humble place at the department of Sacatepequez, Guatemala, he had a happy childhood with loving parents. However, he was sent to a boarding school, in which his desire to be different from his family grew stronger. At the same time, he also made long-lasting friendships and developed his love for math.
After graduating, he married my grandmother and had their first children. However, he was also offered a scholarship at the Technological Institute of Monterrey, which made them had to move there temporarily. Despite the pressure of school and having to keep his family and an upcoming baby, he was also able to graduate and return to Guatemala.
While working in Guatel, my grandpa was offered by a friend to study at Stanford University, and eventually made it there. Without knowing much English, he accepted the challenge and in a few months of commitment, he was able to speak English fluently. Finally, he graduated as an electronic mechanical engineer and returned home again, this time to complete his family and work on his goals.
My grandpa never stopped searching for opportunities and became a pioneer of telecommunications in Guatemala by founding 5 companies of his own and working hard to bring the most modern technologies. This helped Guatemala greatly when it came to modernizing the country and improving long-distance communications. At the same time, he was a man with values and a loving father and husband who always worked for giving his family the things he once lacked as a child.
Nowadays, he is retired but is a person all of our family looks up to as a great example of perseverance and self-improvement. He is a person respected by all of his friends and acquaintances, a great man, yet down-to-earth and easy to talk to.
