- For this assignment, I chose the speech “The Gettysburg Address” by Abraham Lincoln.The audience of this speech was basically the American people during the American Civil War, especially people who had lost family members or were directly affected by the war. It was given at a cemetery for soldiers, so a lot of the audience was probably grieving and looking for meaning in what was happening. I think it was meant for people who cared about the country staying together and what it stood for.I think the language is appropriate for the time and place. It sounds formal and serious, which makes sense because it’s about honoring soldiers who died. Even though it was written a long time ago, it’s still pretty easy to understand, and it doesn’t feel overly complicated.
- The main point Lincoln is trying to make is that the soldiers didn’t die for nothing. He’s saying that the country needs to keep going and stay committed to freedom and equality. He also points out that it’s up to the living to continue what the soldiers started.What I like about the speech is that it’s really short but still powerful. It doesn’t drag on, and every line actually means something. It kind of makes you stop and think, even though it’s not very long.One thing I don’t like as much is that it’s a little vague in some parts. Like, he talks more about ideas than specific actions, so it leaves some things open to interpretation.

- The EndThe tone is serious and respectful, and it definitely keeps my attention. It feels meaningful without being boring, which is kind of impressive for something written that long ago.Yeah, I do feel somewhat persuaded by the speech. It makes me think more about unity and why the war mattered. It doesn’t really tell me exactly what to do, but it does make me feel like continuing the fight for equality is important.
