Summer 1940-War was coming. Ken Sparks received a letter that he could sail to safety on a ship to Canada.
Lifeboat 12
He was not happy. He wanted to stay with his family. He felt his stepmom did not like him or want him around.
Ken read books so they could take him away on adventures. He did not have a lot of money or food. His family was poor.
He was happy about one thing. When he had to go to the new world his family bought him a wool coat that was his own.
Ken actually felt happy on his new journey. He had friends, food, and was on a big fancy ship.
A torpedo hit the ship. It started sinking and we had to get in lifeboats. It was cold and dark. Not much food, water, or hope. Everyone was sure they would drown or die at sea.
They made a new plan to head to Ireland. Auntie Mary always read books to the kids to give hope. Another ship rescued them at sea. They were reunited with their families. There was a big welcome home celebration for all of the survivors. Lifeboat 12 saved everyone.
"The theme of the story is never give up hope. Things are never as bad as you see them"Ken's stepmom could not look at his bike at home without crying. She truly cared for him.
