- Prior to the formation of the UAE,
- The Emirates were called The Trucial States - an assembly of autonomous Sheikhdoms - prior to the establishment of the UAE, which formed a strong relationship with the British Government by signing a treaty in 1892. The Emirates were called The Trucial States, which built close relations with the British Government by signing a treaty in 1892, which meant that the British would defend them but limited thier power over the land. It expired on the first of December, 1971.

- Both Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Rashid decided that the best path was to construct a Partnership among them and welcome all the Gulf Emirates to form a new federal government.
- On 2 December 1971, in the Union Hall - now the Etihad Museum - the Rulers of the Seven Emirates gathered to form the UAE.
- In the first parliament, Ahmed Khalifa Al Suwaidi, then Sheikh Zayed's advisor, was appointed Foreign Minister and declared to the media the establishment of the UAE.
