Ok class today we are going to learn about non-persistent, persistent, biological indicators, non-point source, point source and nitrates and phosphates in water
Non-persistent are wastes that can be broken down into simple non-polluting compounds by naturally occurring chemical reactions. some examples are Fertilizers and sewage.
A persistent pollutant accumulates in the environment, break downs very slowly, or perhaps not at all. For example petroleum products and heavy metal wastes are examples of the pollutants.
A biological indicator is an organism, species, or community that shows the presence of specific environmental conditions like biomass, fungi, lichens, as well as the population of earthworms, nematodes, termites, and ants.
Pollutants that enter the environment from specific locations are know as point source, such as drainpipes and smokestacks. The emission of pollutants from non-point sources such as feedlots, golf course, construction sites and fertilized sites, are often separated both in time and location from the source
Phosphates and nitrates might seem friendly for agricultural but it is not so good for water supplys. nitrates and phosphates in water become source of food for algae and other plant life, resulting in the formation of algal bloom which then results of the eutrophication of a pond or lake
