To achieve the dream of Italian unification, many determined people such as lawyers,doctors etc. started forming secret societies to oppose the conservative regimes. One such society was called 'Young Italy' founded by Giuseppe Mazzini in 1831.

The goal of Young Italy is to advocate the necessity for Italian unification through the desires and actions of the Italian people.
The unification process was strengthened after 1848, when the diplomat of The Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia (the most wealthiest and liberal Italian state of that time), Cavour, secured an alliance with France to overthrow Austrian rule over the northern region.

With the support of France, Austrians were successfully defeated in 1859, and the region of Lombardy was brought together with the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. With this the unification process became victorious over northern Italy. After the victory, Piedmont-Sardinia ceded Sevoy and Nice to France.
