Jefferson wanted to see what was out west, so tried to buy dock. That way it could be open for trade at all times. At the time France claimed the Louisiana Territory from Spain. France was low on money so when Jefferson sent James Monroe to France, the emperor of France, Napoleon, sold the entire Louisiana Territory for 15 million dollars. This doubled the size of the US, so Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to see what was on the other side.
Alamo
Merriweather Lewis loved to be outside. While he served as an officer in the army, he also studied Native Americans. He was then appointed as the current president's security, Tomas Jefferson. After Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory, he wanted to see what was on the other side, towards the west. Lewis was appointed to explore the land and he chose William Clark as the co-leader who was also an officer, and had skills for tracking land. They both made a group of 40 men ,who were called The Corps of Discovery. Later started the trip on a boat. They were searching for a water route that led to the Pacific Ocean, following President Jefferson's orders. They took notes about their travel, land, and living things. Lewis and Clark saw many wonders as they passed through states. In the mount of November they found a Shoshone woman who was married to a man and had a baby on her back. Her name was Sacagawea. Sacagawea and her family joined Lewis and Clark’s journey. They worked as the translators. They helped the Americans and Native Indians talk to each other. Sacagawea also helped with many other things too. The baby that she carried represented that they were peaceful. Sacagawea and the Native Americans were necessary in the trip. They walked 15 to 20 miles every day. After a while on their journey, they started to lose food. They crossed many places, but in 1805 they finally reached the Pacific. The trip was over a year long. They waited until winter passed to leave home for in 1806. They brought the things that they learned on their way back to America.
Oregon Trail
AAAHHH!! I HAVE CHOLERA!!
The Americans made a treaty with the Lakota people for land, but when gold was found there, the Americans instantly betrayed the treaty and tried to take land from the Lakota for gold, but the Lakota fought back and that was the Battle of Little Bighorn. In 1830 the congress agreed to remove all of the Indians and send them to reservations. The settlers forced the Native Americans out of their land and that was called the trail of tears. It was over 1000 miles long to the reservation and it was winter.
Gold Rush
I foundGOLD!
Many settlers moved into Texas which was part of Mexico back in 1820. Many settlers started moving to Texas and this caused tension between the settlers and the Mexicans. Texas did not follow the rules of Mexico, and carried the rules of America. The president of Mexico, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, was mad at Texas and sent 1000 soldiers to the place. Texians built a tower called the Alamo to fight back, but in 13 days of battle the Texians lost. The Texians fought back remembering the Alamo and all the people who died. They won and Texas became a new country. The Texians decided to join America. The Americans let them in to the country, but Mexico attacked. They fought the Mexican-American war and at the end Mexico surrendered. America paid 15 million dollars for parts of Mexico which expanded the borders of the US.
The Oregon trail was dangerous, lots of people died or went back to their home. There was bad weather and you could risk dying by wagons, getting lost, or drowning. You could have no food at all, but one thing was worse than the rest. Cholera. This disease could kill wagon trains of people. The travelers got cholera by drinking or eating contaminated stuff. For example, dirty water or rotting tomatoes. They most likely stayed dirty and got the disease. Cholera could spread through foods. Cholera goes through your guts and kills you. Once again, the Oregon Trail is deadly.
1848, this was the year gold was found in California. The person who found the gold was named James Marshall, and the gold was found near the American river. Sutter wanted to keep the gold a secret, but news started to spread and everyone heard about the gold. People did not believe the gold but President James K. Polk stamped a seal and people started traveling to the west. People started coming by land and sea to go to California. The trips were long with many dangers. Some people even went back to their homes. The California trail was over 2000 miles long and took 3-6 months. The sea travelers had to go around South America to get to California. In 1849 cartoons were made that made fun at the people rushing to get to California. In 1852, 250000 immigrants moved to California because of the Gold Rush. The Gold Rush let many people live in California. Before the Gold Rush there were barely any settlers, but After the Gold rush, the state was booming with people. Though California was just settled, many people died, because of fights. The reason of this is because, California had very little laws and the laws were small. Many common items that cost $1 cost $50 back then, because it was really rare. The gold was easily gone with so many settlers mining for gold. Many people could not find gold so they could either go home or stay in California. Many people could not find gold, but could still become rich. They could sell items to the miners, getting a lot of money. The Gold Rush is why Mexico gave America, California after the Mexican-American war, and why California became a state.
