  • The theme that best fits The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street by Rod Serling is Fear and Suspicion are Destructive. Firstly, Don tells Goodman that Nothing is working on this street Nothing. No lights, no power, no radio. (And then meaningfully) Nothing except one car-yours! (pg.674) This shows Fear and Suspicion because Don acuses Goodman since his car is working once he does, so he starts destruction and all the characters turn on Goodman. Secondly, Charlie asks Steve Go ahead Steve what kind of radio set you workin on? I never seen it. Neither has anyone else. Who talks to you? (pg.677) This quote from the text supports my theme because Charlie gets angry at Steve for no reason and gets suspicious but Charlie didn't know what type of radio it was. Finally, Charlie kills Pete Van Horn, and the lights in his go on, so all of the characters suspect that Charlie is the monster. (pg.680-681) This shows that the characters all turn on Charlie without knowing the reason. In conclusion, the best theme for The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street is Fear and Suspicion are Destructive.
