Peloponnesian War

The Peloponnesian War was between Athens and Sparta. Both societies disagreed with how the other was run, and after a while, war broke out.
We'll be fine here. Our walls are reinforced with the strongest metals! I don't really feel like fighting anyway.
The people of Athens felt safe in their city and decided not to go out to fight. They also stayed put because they knew that Sparta would beat them in an open battle
Sparta destroyed Athen's fleet at Aegospotami, and less than a year later, Athens surrendered, their city was broken, and Sparta won.
We're gonna be here for a while.
Athens' navy was stronger than Sparta's, but Sparta had a better army than Athens. Sparta surrounded Athens and waited for them to leave so they could fight.
Pericles, the leader of Athens at the time, talked to the people about the city's strong political system and how great their city was during a public funeral for the casualties of combat. This was during the first winter of the war.

During the second year of the war, a plague spread throughout Athens. Over a third of the people died, including Pericles. Even though many people were lost, Athens kept fighting for around 25 years.
