- Reverend Parris discovers his daughter, Betty, unconscious in bed after he caught her and other girls dancing in the woods. He fears that rumors of witchcraft will destroy his reputation. Abigail tries to cover up the truth while also asserting her control over the situation.
- Slayt: 2
- Abigail and John Proctor share a tense moment, revealing their past affair. Abigail still desires Proctor, but he pushes her away. Meanwhile, the townspeople begin to panic over the rumors of witchcraft, and Abigail realizes she can manipulate the situation to her advantage.
- I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart!
- Slayt: 3
- Reverend Hale arrives in Salem to investigate the claims of witchcraft. Under pressure, Tituba confesses (to save herself) and accuses others of being witches. Abigail follows her lead, pretending to see spirits and naming names. This sparks the mass hysteria that drives the rest of the play.
- “No, no, don’t hang Tituba! I tell him I don’t desire to work for him, sir.”
