Students will sort objects according to whether they are living or non-living and identify some features of living things that distinguish them from non-living things, eg reproducing, growing and responding to stimuli.
- Matilda invited Henry over to meet her new pet. "These are my gold fish" said Matilda proudly.
- "I must look after them" said Matilda. Matilda's mother had made her a list of things Matilda must do to keep her gold fish happy and alive.
- Looking after a goldfish 1. Feed once a day 2. Keep the water clean 3. Keep your fish company
- Henry wanted a pet too. When Henry arrived home he went into the garden to find something that he could look after.
- And there it was... a rock. Henry picked it up and hurried inside to care for his new pet.
- Henry's rock was not really doing much. He decided it needed a home like the gold fish so he put it in a bowl.
- The rock just sat there.
- "Maybe my rock is thirsty?"
- So Henry gave it some water but this just made the rock wet.
- Henry went and picked some leaves to feed his rock.
- "Maybe my rock is hungry?"
- The rock just sat and sat some more. So Henry decided to sing to his new pet to make it happy.
- "La la laaaaaaa"
- Nothing happened...
- Matilda arrived to meet Henry's new pet rock. "Hmm" said Matilda. "I don't think your rock is alive and won't make a very interesting pet. Maybe we should go back into the garden to see what else we can find?"
- Out in the garden Henry and Matilda searched for a new pet. On the plant that Henry had picked the leaves for his rock they found a lady beetle. They carefully scooped the lady beetle up and took it inside.
- "I think my bowl with the leaves and rock might make an ok new home for my lady beetle" said Henry. "I think you're right" said Matilda.
