I have tried and failed. Augustine found peace—why can’t I?
(sipping tea)Because Augustine’s journey wasn’t about theatrics, Gus. He didn’t try to live Confessions, he lived, then confessed.
But I wanted to be holy!
Holiness isn’t a checklist. It’s transformation. Augustine wrestled with himself—his desires, his ambition, his need for control. He said, ‘Lord, make me chaste, but not yet.’

(laughing weakly)I might have been hoping for ‘not yet’ myself.
Augustine didn’t just give up desire—he reoriented it. He saw that our hearts are restless until they rest in something greater than fleeting pleasures.
And I’ve been restless… just less in God, and more in nonsense.
And that’s why grace isn’t earned—it interrupts us. It’s messy. It sneaks up on you, just like Augustine realized when he finally let go.

The Pear materializes, arms crossed, nodding.
See? I told you that stealing fruit wasn’t the lesson.
(Gus groans, but chuckles.) Alright, maybe I stop trying to re-create his life and actually read what he’s saying.
