- How can I fight a war I don't believe in? I can't go to war and willingly kill someone, without knowing the imperative of the war's cause.

- "Anything" (O' Brien 46).
- Tim O' Brien couldn't bring himself to face the thought of dying at any moment. Tim was no soldier, and he believed that he was too smart, too compassionate, and that he was above the war. He was a summa cum laude and president of the student body, so it had to be a mistake...
- Elroy Berdahl, the owner of the lodge, was Tim's savior who had a feeling Tim was in trouble, but didn't ask questions, never prying, for fear that Tim would disappear. Tim was so wired and jittery that for the six days he stayed at the lodge, he vomited and was dizzy with sorrow.
- Tim felt shame and guilt for doing the right thing, which was for him to run away, but something was pulling Tim towards the war, like a weight. He feared that the folks back home would think badly of him and call him a coward. He was leaving everything behind and was feeling lonely and isolated, the most deadly feelings.
