- Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves.
- Slaves cheered at the news of their freedom
- Hooray!
- What if this only makes things worse.
- But some democrats in the North believed the proclamation would only prolong the the war.
- How dare he!
- Why me!
- Southerners were furious at the news that slaves had been freed.
