During the Great Depression, many young men were being cut off from their jobs, forcing them to search for another. Employers thought that older, married employees need the jobs more because they have a family to support.
Im sorry lads but we have to let you go. We just dont have the dough to pay ya.
Then the young men set out to different countries for a search to acquire another job. There was no luck at the time. The City Relief Officers started to worry about these drifters because they thought they would violence within the community.
These men better dry up before they cause any Jam
The federal government listened to the concerns and created something called Relief Camps. These camps were created to gather all the drifters and allow them to work 8 hours a day and get payed 20¢ a day. They received work clothes, food, and a place to sleep. This all sounded great except for the fact that 88 men slept 2 to a bunk in a 24m by 7.3m bunkhouse. These men had not future and weren't even allowed to vote.
Then in 1935 over 1000 camp workers from the Vancouver area jumped a couple empty freight cars and headed over to Ottawa to directly complain to the prime minister. Along the way many discontented workers accompanied them. As these men travelled through cities, the people there greeted them with food and wished them well. They soom met the RCMP and had a meeting, names were called, and a disagreement came along. Due to the outcome they returned to Regina and were determined to continue the trek.

The riot lasted till late evening and it was decided that the camps we of no help, yet closing the camps did not solve the problems of the unemployed.
