Once upon a time there lived a couple in New York City.Their names were Norma and Arthur. One day Norma opened the door only to find a mysterious package outside of their door. She picked it up and took it inside to her husband. A note said a man by the name of Mr. Steward will come by at 8:00.
Mr. Steward came by at 8:00 and introduced the product to the couple. He said that if they pushed the button, they will receive $50,000, but someone that they do not know will die. They were in shock and questioned him. They asked him who he represents, but he cannot tell them. Arthur asked Mr. Steward to leave and take his button with him. Arthur didn't care about it, but Norma secretly was intrigued.
The next day, she took the pieces of Mr. Steward's business card and put it in her purse before leaving for work. At work when she was on her coffee break, she taped the card together because Arthur had ripped it up. She called the number right before 5:00. She talked to Mr. Steward and said she was curious. When he asked her if she wanted the button back, she said no and promptly hung up. Later when she got home, she found the box outside of her apartment.
Norma brought it in after hesitating for a while. When her husband came home, she talked to him about it and asked him what if it was a genuine offer. He got upset and asked her if she wanted to murder someone. She said she wouldn't count it as murder. Arthur began to name people who could possibly die but Norma was persistent. Eventually, he got so upset and scared that he turned white. She dropped the conversation.
The next morning, Norma made a nice breakfast so she can show she wasn't selfish. She said she wanted the money so that they can do things together and even have a baby. She said it was probably an experiment to see what people would do under a circumstance like theirs. Arthur began to stutter. He didn't answer her and eventually left for work. When he had left, she finished washing the dishes and stopped. She grabbed the button out of the cabinet, opened the top, and pushed the button. She made an annoyed noise. "Nothing." she thought. "Nothing will happen, it's all a scam."
When she got home from work, Norma went to make dinner. Soon she got a phone call. The call was from her local hospital calling to inform her that her husband had been pushed off of the platform at the subway and onto the path of the train! She suddenly remembered her husbands life insurance policy for $25,000 worth double with accidental cause of death. She also remembered Mr, Steward's deal. She called him and yelled into the phone "YOU SAID I WOULDN'T KNOW THE ONE THAT DIED!" Mr. Steward replied "My dear lady, do you really think you knew your husband?"
