  • IDEA OVERVIEW
  • IDEA stands for Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. It is a law established in 1975 that helps to ensure that students with disabilities have access to free appropriate public education (FAPE). This education should meet the students individual needs and promotes flourishing in the least restrictive environment (LRE).Thats just a way of saying they should be able to learn alongside their peers if possible.
  • I'm not clear what IDEA is or how it applies to me. I'm just a teacher?
  • IDEA is something just for special education I think?
  • Narrator: Many teachers are confused about how IDEA applies to them. There can often be misinformation that is important to have clarified.

  • EFFECTS ON INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS
  • IDEA outlines its Child Find policy which means finding, identifying and evaluating students who may need assistance. Please take a handout with additonal details.
  • That is great! This means that our response is prompt and we don't have to wait for students to fail before we step in to help!
  • So, based on these handouts, it appears that evaluations are fair, utilize multiple methods, and make individualized decisions for the students! Thats wonderful!
  • Narrator: If a student is struggling at school, IDEA and FAPE help make sure they recieve the support they need and in the LRE - which means alongside peers as much as possible.

  • EFFECTS ON PARENTS / GUARDIANS
  • This law helps parent feel empowered too. If they notice thier child struggling they can request an evaluation. They also must give consent.
  • Yes!. Its great that we include parents in the process too!
  • So after written consent is given, we have 60days to complete the evaluation. That ensures that important support is not delayed.
  • Narrator: The Effect of IDEA extends beyond just the individual students. As the group readies for a break, the conversation lingers.

  • EFFECTS ON INSTITUTIONS
  • Yes, there is more responsibility, but look what good it achieves for the school too... We have resources and support to form IEP's for students. It's all developed cooperatively. And there are multiple people monitoring progress. That has to mean less burnout for us teachers!
  • So there is significant responsibility placed on the school to adhere to the legal standards of FAPE and LRE provision. All personnel need to be qualified and maintain confidentiality.
  • Narrator: As they break for lunch, the teachers consider the effects of IDEA on the school.

  • BENEFITS OF THE LAW
  • It gives families a voice too. As we all monitor progress, we can all strategize ways to adjust if needed to promote flourishing
  • I really appreciate how IDEA provides inclusive opportuites for all students. It really shows respect for diversity and provides equity in the academic environment.
  • Narrator: Its important to not look at these policies as a burden, and really examine the benefits this law provides.

  • LIMITATIONS OF THE LAW
  • Yes. No system is perfect. But we know the weak spots to be aware of
  • Its seems like lack of proper implementation and untrained personnel would be a potential drawback? Or for some families, access to advocacy?
  • Narrator: There are also limitations of IDEA. Being aware of them aides in adherence.
  • Slayt: 9
  • COMPLIANCE ASSISTANCE
  • To ensure we are in compliance with the law, we will have regular trainings for staff, there will be procedural checklists, and progress review to ensure decisions for students are made based on multiple assessment factors, in partnership with parents, and agreed upon.
  • Narrator: As they head back to the classroom, Principal Precup explains three tools the school will utilize to ensure adherance to IDEA. Compliance is of utmost importance both in terms of legal liability, but also for the student whos needs we are seeking to meet.

  • ADVOCACY RECOMMENDATIONS
  • It is important to remember that we advoacate together! First, we start my making information easliy and widely accessible. Second, we communicate with students and parents about their goals and struggles regularly and finally, we provide resources appropriatly and promptly!
  • What are some ways we can assist with advocacy? As a potential limitation of the law, what can we do?
  • Narrator: As awareness and advocay are crucial elements of implementing IDEA, Principal Precup answers questions about how to assist individuals and families.

  • VIRTUOUS ACTION STANDARDS
  • IDEA requires integrity, respect, and prioritization of human flourishing. As leaders, we are called to model these character traits. Thank you for coming today and for your commitment to human flourishing!
  • ,Narrator: At the root of IDEA, FAPE, LRE, and similar policies, is the heart of why we do what we do.

  • VIRTUOUS ACTION STANDARDS
  • You know, when I think about this concept of IDEA, equity, service, and empowerment, it really does line up well with my Christian worldview too. Loving others the way Christ did and serving them... it is a blessing to be a part of contributing to others well being!
  • Yes, when we model character education even as it applies to legal adherance, that speaks volumes about our integrity. I hope that those we serve truly feel loved.
  • Narrator: IDEA is about providing access to free education that meets the needs of all students., Knowing there a people that care personally about your success is a great feeling. When those two things are combinted, the result is powerful and can be life-changing!
