Storm Catchers by Tim Bowler

In Storm Catchers by Tim Bowler, the main character, Fin, leaves his house one night to visit his friend, Billy. He leaves behind his younger siblings, Ella and Sam, alone in the house. Ella is kidnapped.

When Fin returns home, he finds Ella missing and has to confess to his parents that it is his fault. As they go out in search for Ella, his dad is clearly angry with him. Meanwhile, Ella has been taken by dinghy, through heavy seas, to a hidden cave and left alone while the kidnapper makes his demands.

Back on land, Fin’s friend Billy suggests that they make a pendulum scribe to try to find Ella. To their amazement, Sam, Fin’s younger brother, is the one who is able to make it work. Sam holds the pendulum over a map, and Sam identifies Penrig lighthouse as the place Ella might be. Fin searches the deserted lighthouse for Ella, in vain.

Soon the kidnapper phones the family with his demands; Fin and Dad collect the money from the bank and Fin takes instructions from the kidnapper and goes to deliver the money. However, things do not go as planned. The kidnapper moves Ella to one of the Furies Islands as a new location. Again Sam helps to locate where she might be, and Fin and his Dad head out to the islands, against his Dad’s will. When they approach, they hear a gunshot and find Ella where Sam had predicted, and the kidnapper is caught.

In the end, Ella is recovered, the kidnapper is taken into custody, and secrets from Dad’s past are revealed which change their lives, explaining the kidnapping and Sam’s special gifts.
