The#160;Crimean War#160;was a conflict between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. Russia wanted a warm-weather port, causing them to attempt to obtain land around the Black Sea. This eventually spurred a#160;geopolitical#160;war. Since Britain and France also did not want Russia to gain the land, they allied with the Ottomans and defeated Russia. While the war was a landmark for coverage and gender equality, it also revealed the Ottoman Empire's military weakness.
Sepoy Mutiny (1857)
The Sepoy Mutiny was an Indian uprising against the British occupiers. Rumors arose that rifle cartridges were coated with fat from cows and pigs, fueled by the recent land seizure. Many Sepoys refused to use the cartridges since it went against their beliefs. When Britain imprisoned individuals who refused, a rebellion erupted, culminating in the conquest of Delhi, which extended the mutiny throughout Northern and Central India. However, the British were saved from defeat due to a lack of unity.
Berlin Conference (1884)
The Berlin Conference brought together 14 European countries to establish principles for splitting Africa. While rules were established, such as alerting other countries and demonstrating good government, the primary goal was to divide the country. Despite the meeting's impact on Africa and European imperialism, European colonies did not account for ethnic or linguistic groups, and no African delegates were present at the discussions.
Battle over Tobacco (1890)
The tobacco boycott was a movement in Persia that prevented tobacco from being exported to European countries. When Nasir al-Din let this to happen, the bargain enraged another leader, Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, who organized a boycott against heavy-smoking Persians. After riots broke out, the king was obliged to halt the export. Persia's unrest, on the other hand, persisted, and the government was powerless to stop it.
Battle of Adowa (1896)
The Battle of Adowa is significant in African history since it was the first and only victorious African insurrection. The resistance's triumph was largely due to Menelik II, who became Emperor in 1989. Menelik declared war on them as they invaded after signing a flawed treaty that made Italy a protectorate. Then came the Battle of Adowa, in which Ethiopian forces overcame Italian forces, allowing them to maintain their land until now.
Boer War (1899)
The Boer War was fought between the Boers, who were African Dutch settlers, and the British. The Boers started the war by blaming the British for an insurrection intended to give outsiders and adventurers political rights. The Boer War was the world's first modern war, and both sides used brutal tactics. In 1902, Britain won the war, regaining control of all Boer land and resources, which included rich diamonds and gold.
