- Causes
- The Spanish-American War was bound to happen. Reasons were yellow journalism and problems between the US and Cuba. The US wanted to force Spain out of Cuba. And yellow journalism created intense competition between Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. In January 1898 President William Mckinley ordered the USS Maine to be sent out to Havana port to provide protection for the US citizens and protect property in Cuba. The USS Maine made it to Havana port on January 25, 1898, and on February 15, 1898 at 9:40 PM it unexpectedly exploded. This event triggered the US to declare war on April 25, 1898.

- Effects
- After the Spanish-American war America gained control over Cuba, Guam, and Puerto Rico. The Spanish-American War caused tons of casualties, America had 4,119 casualties and the Spanish had 56,400- 56,600 casualties. On December 10, 1898 the Treaty of Paris officially ended the Spanish-American War. With this war it causes the US to rise as a major colonial power. The victory of America, put an end to the Spanish’s colonial empire
