- In the Early days of the war, African Amercian men weren't able to enlist in both the Confederate and Union army. However, the Union changed this policy, formally allowing African Americans to enlist after the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.

- Kentucky senator John Crittenden fought to keep the state in the Union despite his sons fighting on opposite sides. This is a prime example of the "brother against brother" nature of the Civil War.
