Ch 8 African civilizations

The savanna’s the northern coast and the southern tip of Africa. These places had fertile soil on the coasts which means it was densely populated by farmers
Most people in Africa live in the savanna’s. These grassy plains included mountainous highlands and swampy tropical stretches.
Africas earliest peoples were nomadic hunter gatherers.
The first humans appeared in the great Rift Valley, a deep gash in earths crust that runs through the floor of the Red Sea and across Eastern Africa
The societies of the Sahara like all human cultures shared common elements. Families that shared common ancestors sometimes formed groups known as clans.
African peoples organized themselves into family groups. They also developed belief systems that helped them understand and organize information about their world.
The people of Africa unlike everyone else skipped over the copper age and Bronze Age.
west Africa’s earliest known culture was the Nok. They were also the first west African people to smelt iron.
