- The poem begins with the author starts with setting the location on the beach with two kids who were in love. This is important as later in the story the location is detrimental to the demise of Annabel Lee.

- After coming of age the author tells us that the wind from a cloud caused Annabel Lee to grow sick. This shows the forced separation between the young lovers starting the authors torment.

- We then see that even after her passing the author finds pieces of her to cherish in the moon and stars in the night sky. This alludes to the fact that the haunting loss keeps him up at night,

- The use of imagery that speaks of the moon bringing the author dreams of his love shows that he only escapes his pain with sleep as it is the only place he can see her.
