  • "I heard all things in heaven and in the hell".
  • Figurative Language
  • "There came to my ears a low dull quick sound such as a watch makes when enveloped in cotton i knew that sound well too it was the beating of the old mans heart".
  • "Yet the sound increased and what could i do ? it was a low dull quick sound much as a sound a watch makes hen enveloped in cotton.I gasped for breath and yet the officers heard it not."

  • This quote proves that the narrator is unreliable because he has never been to neither heaven or h3ll.

  • "But the noise arose over all and continually increased it grew louder louder"!
  • I must scream or die and now again hark louder! louder! louder!
  • The quote is an example of a simile because  it uses the words "a watch makes when enveloped in cotton" and compares it to the old man's heart.

  • And so it was so impossible to do the work for it was the old man who vexed me but his evil eye".
  • This quote proves that the author's tone is suspenseful because these specific words "I gasped for breath yet the offices heard it not".

  • i kept quite still and said nothing for a whole hour i did not move a muscle and in the meantime i did not hear him lie down.
  • The repeated phrase creates suspense because the story starts to become interesting
  • The evil eye symbolizes hatred against something or someone. 
  • this example of imagery contributes to the tone of suspense because it describes how still he was in a very detailed way.
