- Karl Rossman is a 16 year old boy who was sent to America by his parents due to an affair with the maid. He admires the statue of freedom instead of leaving the ship like the others.

- CONFLICT
- Karl realizes he forgot his umbrella down in the ship and asks his aquaintance to watch his suitcase. He leaves back into the ship.

- RISING ACTION
- Karl gets lost on the ship, He meets the Stoker, and gets to know his difficult working conditions there. The Stoker will get fired soon because the chief engineer dislikes Germans.Karl decides to stay with him and help.

- Climax
- They head to the Captains office to discuss the matter. Karl tries to help the stoker and defend him in front of the chief engineers and directors to save The Stoker and his job.

- Falling Action
- Karl and The Stoker try their best, yet nothing works to get justice. The Senator recognizes Karl as his nephew and the "Stoker Topic" is put aside for now

- RESOLUTION
- The story ends with the Senator taking Karl with him, and the Stoker being left alone to his fate. Karl is very emotional and would rather stay with The Stoker.
