- Charlie Gordon is 37 years old and is learning in a class for people that have mental disabilities. Ms. Kinian is the teacher, she is very nice and caring for her students. Charlie has an IQ of 68, which makes many things in his life very challenging, but he has a very positive view on everything. Charlie works very hard to learn things in class, even when its hard.
- Climax
- Ms. Kinian explains to Charlie that there are two doctors who have selected him to be the first human to have an operation done on his brain to make him smarter. Charlie agrees to the operation and was fine after it was over. The doctors have him take tests and write progress reports in a journal.
- Falling Action
- Charlie is learning new things very fast and makes a friend with a mouse named Algernon that had the same operation done as Charlie. Charlie is able to learn tons of information quickly and his IQ is now in the 200's. Charlie leaves his job at the plastic box factory, because his coworkers felt that he was looking down on them since he was so smart.
- Resolution
- Charlie is so smart that he is actually smarter than the doctors that made him that way. He learns that Algernon is regressing and is starting to lose his intelligence and eventually gets sick and die. Charlie is very sad from this and writes a letter to the doctors that their experiment was not successful and he will regress too. Charlie notices that he is starting to forget things that he remembers before.
- Charlie buried Algernon in his backyard after the doctors were done with him. Charlie was regressing very fast and was losing his intelligence that he had gained from the operation. Soon, Charlie was basically back to where he had started. 
- Since Charlie didn't want to be remembered as the guy who was smart and then became less intelligent again, he decided to move away. Charlie wrote a letter to Ms. Kinian that he was going to leave. Then went to restart his life in a different place.
