There's one BIG difference!
SUSAN CAN FLY
MARCUS CANNOT FLY
Oh no - A wildfire! FLY FOR YOUR LIFE, MARCUS!

One day - DISASTER Strikes
I would LOVE to do that, Susan - if I could FLY, WHICH I CAN'T.
In the woods, there lives a happy population of birds. They are all closely related, except for a few minor VARIATIONS in their PHENOTYPES and GENOTYPES. Things may seem peaceful now, but soon tragedy will strike. This tradegy will provide an example of NATURAL SELECTION.
DEATH Occurs - but the Genes must be passed down nonetheless!
Wow... every single one of 'em died - even Marcus!Well, at least now we black birds have a reproductive advantage.
I guess it's not exactly an advantage to be a bird that can't fly! It's not really optimal for survival.
In this population, the birds are mostly the same, except for ONE difference... 50% of the birds can fly, and 50% of the birds can't! Meet two examples: SUSAN and MARCUS. Susan's feathers are all black and she can fly. Marcus's feathers are brown and white, and he cannot fly. This doesn't really matter... yet.
Susan carries on the family line!(for the black birds, that is)
You know, they say there used to be BROWN birds - who couldn't even fly!
Impossible!... well, even if they did exist, I guess there's a reason they don't exist anymore.
One day, there's a humongous wildfire in the woods where the birdies live! All of the trees that they live in burn to the ground. Susan and the other black birds are able to fly away and escape the raging flames. Marcus and the brown birds, however... can't fly. So - well, you know what happened to them.
Unfortunately, the fire killed every single brown, non-flying bird. Only the black flying birds survived. The fact that they were the only ones alive gave them a REPRODUCTIVE ADVANTAGE, allowing them to pass their genes onto the next generation.
Susan and all of the black birds begin to reproduce. The deaths of all of the brown birds gave them a REPRODUCTIVE ADVANTAGE, so only black birds got to pass on their genes to the next generations. This also meant that there was less VARIATION in the GENOTYPES and PHENOTYPES of future generations. The trait that allowed only the black birds to survive is a real example of NATURAL SELECTION.
Yeah, 'cuz they couldn't FLY.Heh. Losers.
