- Egeus complains to Duke Theseus of Athens about his disobedient daughter, who against his wish for her to marry Demetrius, is in love with Lysander

- Hermia is crying as the reality of her cruel fate dawns upon her. Lysander doesn't comfort her but instead recounts times where love was never easy. Helena is sad and angry at Hermias as Demetrius loved Hermia instead of her.

- The Labourers meet to give out their roles they are to play in their production which has been chosen to be played at Duke Theseus' wedding. Bottom wants to play every single role.

- Oberon, King of the fairies, and Titania his queen along with their minions and followers are introduced. We are also shown their rocky relationship.

- Titania leaves Oberon and refuses give custody of the little Indian boy to Oberon. Oberon asks Puck to retrieve a mysterious herb called “love-in-idleness.”
