- Exposition: 'The House on Mango Street'Cisneros introduces Esperanza and her family and all of the places they have lived. Esperanza is under the impression that this house of Mango Street will be temporary.
- The house on Mango Street isn't it. For the time being, Mama says. Temporary, says Papa. But I know how those things go (Cisneros, pg 5).

- Sire. How did you hold her? Was? Like this? And when you kissed her? Like this (Cisneros, pg 73)?
- Rising Action: 'Louie, His Cousin His Other Cousin', 'Marin', and 'Sire'These three vignettes introduce the loss of innocence and realization of things going on in her community. In 'Louie, His Cousin His Other Cousin', Esperanza is realizing that there are people in her community doing things that are illegal which are broadening her understanding. In 'Marin', Esperanza is witnessing a girl who is trying to get out of the community through marrying. In 'Sire' she is losing innocence through growing up and experimenting with sexuality.
- The nose of that yellow Cadillac was all pleated like an alligator's...They put handcuffs on him and put him in the backseat of the cop car, and we all waved as they drove away (Cisneros, pg 25)

- Climax: Red ClownsThe turning point of the story is when Esperanza is waiting for Sally at the red clowns and the boy comes up and kisses and touches Esperanza without her consent. This is the point in the story where she loses almost all of her innocence.
- What he did. Where he touched me. I didn't want it, Sally. The way they said it, the way it's supposed to be, all the storybooks and movies, why did you lie to me (Cisneros, pg 99)?
