- Hiram Revels was born to a free mother and father in North Carolina on 9/27/1827.He received an early education from a free Black women who ran a small private school. That was a major opportunity at the time.

- Hiram became a pastor after fishing his educations at Beech Grove Quaker Seminary in Liberty, Indiana, and the Dark County Seminary for black students. He traveled all over the states to preach to Black people. He was later arrested for preaching to African Americans.

- When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Revels helped recruit two black regiments from Maryland. In 1862, when black soldiers were permitted to fight, he served as the chaplain for a black regiment in campaigns in Vicksburg and Jackson, Mississippi. In 1863, Revels returned to St. Louis, where he established a freedmen’s school. After his term was over as a senator, he returned to the ministry when he took a pastorate at a church in Holly Springs. He later went back to work in a school environment in 1876. After his retirement in 1882, he remained active in the religious community and died in 1901 while attending a religious conference.
