- In this scene, we meet two main characters and set up the conflict between Frederick Douglass and the cruel slave breaker, Mr.Covey.
- Climax-Douglass vs. Covey
- Take hold of him, take hold of him!
- I will resist every second!
- When Douglass is working, he collapsed from being too exhausted and stops working. Covey gets angry and beats Douglass for not doing his work.
- Resolution-Victory
- After all, maybe I will be free one day...
- In this scene, Douglass gets scared of Covey and runs away and hides where Covey can't find him.
- When Douglass is working in the stables Covey tries to hurt him. Douglass responds quickly and fights back.
- Douglass wins the fight and gets a moral victory. He gains his confidence back, along with his determination to be free.
