  • The United States does not have one religion, which means people can practice theirs freely and do not have to practice a religion they do not believe in. Just because the school is praying to a certain religion does not mean that the children have to. In no way is the school violating the first ammendment

  • The majority ruling states that requiring students to participate in religious prayer is unconstitutional. Required daily recitation of the Regents' prayer is inconsistent with the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. The Court feels that it is no business of the government to compose official prayer for any group of the American people to recite as part of a religious program carried on by government.
  • The dissenting opinion states, the Court (majority opinion) has misapplied a great constitutional principle... to deny the opportunity of sharing in the spiritual heritage of our nation would be wrong. The government already fosters religion: all presidents, Washington to Kennedy, has asked the protection and help of God. In 1954 the line "one Nation under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance. Since 1865 the words "In God We Trust" has been printed on our coins.
