  • The Cogswell family had a daughter who was Deaf, and they didn't know what to do so they brought Gallaudet to meet her, but he found that he couldn't communicate with her. And he thought even know she is Deaf she still deserves an education. So he looked for ideas but found nothing, so he decided to go to Europe.

  • After sailing to England Gallaudet visited the Braidwood Institute where they were teaching students how to mimic sounds instead of thinking for themselves. So Gallaudet went to Paris where they were teaching students how to sign. Abbe Sicard and Lauren Clerc hosted an exhibition to showcase the children. The students gave very impressive answers to the questions asked, so Gallaudet asked the teachers if he could bring their best student to America to create a school.

  • The best student wasn't interested in going to America. The second-best student was Lauren Clerc. He wasn't sure about going to America at first but after some convincing he agreed to go teach in America for 3 years then return home. On the way back to America they didn't waste time. They got straight to learning off each other. They spend a full year raising money to build a school and on April 15th, 1817, the first school for the Deaf was established. Clerc ended up settling in America and never returned to England.
