  • The German armies invade Denmark, and Annemarie's dark-haired, Jewish friend, Ellen, is now unsafe
  • So Annemarie, her mother, Kirsti (her younger sister), and Ellen flee and seek refuge at Annemarie's Uncle Henrik's house far away by the coast of Denmark
  • And while the presence of these soldiers here is certainly less than in Annemarie's hometown, they still jeopardize Ellen's safety.
  • The best, but possibly most dangerous option, is to send Ellen and another group of Jews across the sea to Sweden, a country free from Germany's rule.
  • The handkerchief contains a substance which will hinder German search dogs' abilities to track their scent
  • Annemarie succeeds in her pursuits, and Ellen and the rest of the group of Jews are safely sent to freedom in Sweden.
  • Finally, in an epilogue, Annemarie and Ellen are reunited once more after years of war, and life in Denmark will soon be back to normal.
  • But on the way to the boat, a white packet containing a tampered-with handkerchief that will allow to the group to safely escape is misplaced, and Annemarie must now conceal and bring the packet to the boat before it is too late
