To answer your question about preventing them from being extinct, we must first look at how species here have gone extinct. Looking at the Geologic Time Scale, The five mass extinctions here were the Ordovician extinction in 445 Ma due to sea levels, the Late Devonian in 370 Ma and Permian-Triassic in 252 Ma also having to do with the sea, the Triassic-Jurassic Extinction in 201 Ma, and the Cretaceous-Paleogene Extinction in 66 Ma due to a great asteroid. Now, the best option would be to help get their civilizations liquid intake low, or help them detect when asteroids will hit.

All of those extinctions showed the differences in the Eras of the Geologic Time Scale. The Paleozoic Era was about marine life, the Mesozoic was about mammals and reptiles, and the Cenozoic is about large mammals and us. The first two eras had many extinctions. Let's hope that doesn't occur.
Secondly, taxonomy is the way to go in terms of identifying this new species. Taxonomy is how we identify organisms and animals. The broadest you can get is domain. However, we need to create at least a new "order" for this species. To name it, we need a lot of information, and unfortunately we can't do just yet. Binominal nomenclature is what organism is called, using the genus and species name.
