- Physical Appearance: Old, stoop-shouldered ranch hand with a missing right hand (lost in a farm accident). He has a very old, blind dog.Character Traits: Old, lonely, regretful, vulnerable, fearful of being useless, dependent on others, but also clinging to the dream of the farm with George and Lennie. He is perceptive about the ranch dynamics.

- Physical appereance: Tall, lean, prince of the ranch, with long, black, damp hair and a calm, quiet demeanor. His hands are large and delicate, as delicate in their action as those of a temple dancer. Character traits: Wise, respected, insightful, natural leader, empathetic, calm, authoritative, a master of his craft (mule skinner). He is the voice of reason and the only character who truly understands the complex bond between George and Lennie.
- A guy can talk to you and be quiet with you. I never knew a guy that could put things the way you can.

- Physichal appereance: Young, small, stocky, and wiry. He wears a glove full of Vaseline on one hand (to keep it soft for his wife). He often wears high-heeled boots to appear taller.Character traits: Aggressive, pugnacious, insecure, jealous, boastful, prone to picking fights (especially with larger men), and possessive of his wife. He is a boxer and the boss's son, which gives him a sense of entitlement.
- Heard the boss was on your tail... You God damn tramp, you. You done it, didn't you? I'll show you who's boss.
