  • Boys were taught at home by their mothers or by enslaved men until the age of 6-7. Then they went to school until 14. Learning, reading, writing, arithmetic, and literature. Coaches taught sports such as wrestling and gymnastics. Boys also studied music and learned to sing and to play the lyre, a stringed instrument like a harp. At 18, Athenian men began military training. Girls would stay at home with their mothers and help with household tasks like cooking, cleaning, spinning thread, and weaving cloth. They would normally marry at 15.
  • From the age of 7 all Spartan children trained for war. Girls received military training, which included wrestling, boxing, footracing, and gymnastics. Spartan boys lived and trained in barracks. (buildings) Although boys learned to read and write, those skills were not considered as important as military skills. They were not well fed and were encouraged to steal food without getting caught. At about the age of 20, Spartan men were given a difficult test of fitness, military ability, and leadership skills.
