British sailors would impress, or kidnap, American sailors and force them to work on their ships.
Welcome aboard your new ship...
HURRY UP!!!!
Britain wanted to slow the growth of the U.S., so they sent supplies and weapons to the natives to help them fight against the Americans.
Look! The British are sending help!
That's not fair!!
Since France and Britain were at war, Britain didn't want America to trade with France, and vice versa. This and the Embargo Act hurt America's merchants more than anyone else. By the time both sides stopped, it was too late to prevent war.
Wait a minute....
HELP!
The U.S. victory at the Battle of Lake Erie, September 10, 1813, was a huge morale boost for the Americans. This opened up Canada to U.S. attacks. Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry also has a famous saying "We have met the enemy, and they are ours."
Don't give up the ship!
On August 24, 1814, the British set the U.S. capital and the White House on fire. They were severely damaged, but Dolly Madison was able to save some historical artifacts, such as Washington´s portrait before she evacuated.
On September 12, 1814, the British attacked Fort Mchenry at Baltimore, Maryland. After 72 hours of bombardment, the Americans raised a flag signifying they hadn't surrendered. Francis Scott Key watched from a British ship and wrote a poem about the battle that later become America´s national anthem.
