- Katniss is a 16 year old girl. She is in the distick 12 those who make the mine. She has a little sister named prim and she has her mother. She also has her best friend named Gill.

- Katniss is very protective of her little sister. She tries to reassure her little sister who is afraid of being chosen. Since the death of her father Katniss has been very close to her sister but a little less to her mother.

- Katniss took her sister's place for the harvest. Because she knew she didn't have much chance of winning the hunger games. There is also Peeta who was designated for the boys. In his head he thinks he will not succeed.
