Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad? Hearken! and observe how healthily—how calmly I can tell you the whole story ( Poe 3 ). "
  • Exposition : Insanity Characteristics - This scene helps us ( readers ) understand that his mental being is unstable and is insane as he mentions that people have told him that he is " mad ". He mentions how his insanity is a " disease " that had sharpened his senses.

  • “ I think it was his eye! yes, it was this! One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture—a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees—very gradually—I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye for ever. ( Poe 3 ) “
  • Conflict : The old man's " vulture " eye was his source of anxiety that was " troubling " him. He decided to take the life of the old man so that he could eliminate his anxiety source.

  • “ I undid it just so much that a single thin ray fell upon the vulture eye. And this I did for seven long nights—every night just at midnight—but I found the eye always closed; and so it was impossible to do the work; ( Poe 4 ). “
  • Rising Action : He stalks the old man for seven nights in which he observes the eye with a thin ray of light from his lantern. Despite his efforts in the seven nights , the eye was always closes , causing him to have to continue to wait longer.
