- Sacagawea was only sixteen when she made one of the most remarkable journeys in American history, traveling 4500 miles by foot, canoe, and horse-all while carrying a baby on her back! Without her, the Lewis and Clark expedition might have failed.
- Sacagawea was either 16 or 17 years old when she joined the Corps of Discovery. She met Lewis and Clark while she was living among the Mandan and Hidatsa in North Dakota, though she was a Lemhi Shoshone from Idaho.
- Sacagawea was married to a French-Canadian fur trader named Toussaint Charbonneay who had already been hired by Lewis and Clark to serve as an interpreter. When they learned Sacagawea spoke Shoshone, they decided to bring her along on the journey as well.
