  • Let me tell you the story of my life. When I was young, I lived in a poor little todis with my mother in the south. Most people I knew hated the south because of Jim Crow laws and segregation. But I loved my life there, even if it wasn't pretty. When I suddenly discovered a passion...
  • I discovered this passion when I was six, on my first day at school. For the first time I heard someone reading, it was Miss Randolph my teacher. She was reading a story, and that's when I realised that I would never stop reading.A few years later, at the age of eight, I got into the habit of reading in front of a library reserved for white people.
  • And one day Miss Dawling, a real battle-ax, didn't think I could read, so she asked me to read a sentence from my book, followed by the first two pages. Surprised that I could read, she took me inside the library. But the librarian was vulgar, reminding me of my status as a person of colour. I started to cry. Even Mrs Dowling ended up feeling sorry for me. Her intention was to make me understand that I would never be able to buy one of those books.
