When Mae Jamison was in Harvard, she faced discrimination for being the only African American student.

Mae Jamison growing up watched Apollo Airings and was upset at that there were no female astronauts.
My name is Mae Jamison and I am the first African American Woman to travel in space
She was accepted to work at NASA in 1987 and was one out of the 15 people chosen out of the 2,000. Here she worked on projects at the Kennedy space center in Florida.
I am here to announce the opening of The Jemison group
Her parents supported her education and exploration and let her spend many hours at the library reading about astronomy and science. They encouraged her learning for science fiction novels and spaceflight.
It’s important not only for a little black girl growing up to know, yeah, you can become an astronaut because here's Mae Jemison.
Mae Jemison growing up knew what she wanted to be and when asked by her teacher she said she wanted to become an scientist her teacher said, "Don't you mean a nurse."
A huge accomplishment for Mae Jamison when she spent a week orbiting the Earth on the space endeavor. This made her the first African American Woman in space.
After working for NASA for 6 years, Mae left and started The Jemison Group which is a consulting company that encourages science, technology, and social change.
